Gluten-free, dairy-free ideas, please!

Please, give me some gluten-free and dairy-free ideas, I'm going crazy trying to figure out what I can eat! :-( Anyone have any favorite meals or snacks that would work here?

Anyone in the same situation and can give me some thoughts on what to order when eating out??

It's becoming less of an adventure and more of a pain. On the plus side, it seemed to be working until I cheated slightly and my skin got worse again. Sigh.

Although I am not on a gluten-free diet, I am very happy with the recipes in
Stephanie O'Dea's A Year of Slow Cooking, which features gluten-free crockpot cooking.

Hi! You can eat most everything, just need to be a bit more careful and shift a few things. No panic, you can have a normal life! There are plenty of products and alternatives!

All the "bio" shops have gluten free products, including chocolate croissants, cookies, pasta, etc.

Try to replace pasta by rice, quinoa, among other cereals or beans (chick pea, etc).

Check: http://glutenfreegirl.com/

There are a 1000 gluten free and dairy free books where you can find alternatives to your favorite dishes. The hardest thing is avoiding bread at lunch time in restaurants. I always take my food from home. Try also to stick to Asian restaurants, but avoid soy sauce (it has a LOT of gluten).

More info here: http://www.sbc-asbl.be/

Carrefour and GB have a lot of gluten free pasta and bread in special diet sections. Also there's a brand called lactose free and you can find gouda cheese, milk, etc. Try also soy milk. Take care with milk chocolate.

Gluten free pasta and pizza at this Italian restaurant: http://www.resto.be/ware/details.jsp?businessid=40129

Place Jourdan, Sunday market, there's a guy that sells fresh fluffy gluten free bread! :) I love it.

Anyway, if you have a lot of questions, has Alex my email. I'll be happy to help you. :)

And this one I haven't been, but maybe it's another good alternative: http://cookandtaste.over-blog.com/ext/http://www.allergoshop.be/

I second the suggestion of A Year of Slow Cooking -- my husband and I LOVE it. We've yet to try a bad recipe. Didn't love the follow-up book, but the first one is great. She also writes a blog: http://crockpot365.blogspot.com/

Also check out the cookbooks Veganomicon (not ALL gluten-free, but vegan, so there's some stuff in there), Vegan Cookies Invade Your Cookie Jar and Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World (last two have DELICIOUS recipes and offer notes on making recipes gluten free in the intro)

Good luck! I don't have exactly the same problem you do (I can do gluten, but not a whole other handful of other things), but I do know eating constraints are a pain in the butt.

I was given this book recently, and it has some amazing recipes... and oh... so many varieties!!

There are some pretty good cupcake recipes as well (if you love cupcakes as much as I do)...

I am not gluten free, but my roommate is so I am always trying to adjust things to be gluten free and I have watched her struggle in restaurants. FYI she just ordered a BBQ salmon recently, and the BBQ sauce had gluten...

To shift away from gluten, the big thing for her/me has been to go toward fruits and vegetables. One thing I love is frozen grapes! They are so tasty, especially in the summer. Another good thing is apple butter on rice cakes for a quick snack.

Good luck being gluten free! I know it is a challenge, but it seems like every day there are more and more options out there.

One more piece of advice: take care about wheat in shampoos. Yeap, most of them have it as a main ingredient and if you're intolerant to gluten you might have some problems with that. Cheers

Elaine - I don't have a crockpot, unfortunately...

NoKas - wow, thanks, I'll check out all these links. And seriously? Shampoo? Do any of the regular widely-available brands not use wheat?

Erin - cookies and cupcakes? I'm in! ;-)

anothercookie - I do love cupcakes! I'll have to try some vegan ones, although I gotta say that they sound weird... ;-)

kelsey - They really put it in the strangest foods! Like milk powder, it's everywhere! Is apple butter as simple as it sounds?
